Child cyanide death inquiry and cancer carers campaign

The past few weeks have thrown up some harrowing stories. I’d be lying if I said my work didn’t affect me, after all, one of the reasons that I’m a journalist is to help shine a light on injustice. When one of my stories hits the mainstream media I’m glad to have played my part.

CHILD CYANIDE POISONING

On Friday Labour MP Ian Byrne tabled an Early Day Motion calling for an independent public inquiry into the death by cyanide poisoning of 7-year- old Zane Gbangbola. He was killed when floodwater carried the poison into his home. It left his father paralysed from the waist down. I had the privilege of interviewing Zane’s parents about this in December.

Kye Gbangbola and Nicole Lawler have campaigned for an inquiry into their son’s death for ten years

FLOOD PLAINS

Should we build houses on flood plains?

This YouTube short I filmed has had 15 thousand views.

Off the back of this surge of interest I’m recording a podcast this week about responsible house building. How can we balance the need for more houses with protecting the countryside? I’ll be chatting to Helen Marshall from CPRE and Maxwell Marlow from the Adam Smith Institute.

Email me your thoughts on planning to news@angelawalkerreports.com.

WORLD CANCER DAY

Sunday was World Cancer Day and it reminded me of the courage of mother Christina Harris. She was sacked from her job of 19 years for looking after her daughter who has blood cancer. She’s campaigning for protection for parents like her.

You can hear her story here.

Cancer affects us all. If you’ve been visiting my website lately you may have noticed a few poems paying tribute to my Dad who sadly died in January just a few weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. That’s why I haven’t released a podcast episode for a few weeks. Don’t worry - I have several in the pipeline.
