Socks for Sanitary Towels- The UK’s Shameful Poverty Problem

Parents are forfeiting meals so their children can eat. Women and girls are routinely using socks because they can’t afford sanitary protection. This isn’t some deprived inner city borough. This is happening right now in Berkshire, one of the most affluent counties in the UK. Many families are struggling so much they cannot afford the basics yet don’t qualify for government help.

Emma Cantrell the founder of First Days Children’s Charity in Wokingham tearfully tells me so many people are seeking help the charity is overwhelmed and having to turn families away every day. As the problem worsens, Emma is calling on the government to act now.
