Poem: Today I will cry for you

Today I will cry for you

Because yesterday I could not.

I tentatively break open the seal

And gently unfurl the delicate wrapping

That barely contains my parcel of grief;

The most fragile and powerful of emotions.

Yes, today I will cry for you.

I will break apart the gossamer threads

That hold in a tidal wave of pain

Constantly straining against the slender fibres.

I will allow it to wash over me.

Just for today

Before I carefully gather up my sorrow

And usher it back into its shell

Delicate as a robin’s egg.

For Dad, one year and one day since we scattered your ashes, and one day after what should have been your 78th birthday
